Why small jobs wait

Most plumbers book their week in big blocks: a bathroom, a boiler swap, a day on site. A twenty-minute job across town doesn't fit, because getting there and parking can take longer than the job itself. So it waits. You ring round, leave messages and hear back next week, if at all.

But plumbers' days don't always go to plan. A job finishes early. A customer cancels. That's when a small job nearby is exactly what they want. Fill My Day is built around that moment, so your job reaches plumbers when they actually have time for it.

What you'll do

  1. Post the job once

Say what needs doing, where, and when suits you. Add a photo if it helps.

  2. Hear from plumbers who are free

Your job goes to checked plumbers nearby whose free time fits. They reply with a price.

  3. Pick one and agree the details

Compare prices, profiles and reviews. Accept the one you want, then message them in the app.

EXAMPLE

The kitchen tap in a Redland flat has dripped for three weeks. On a Tuesday lunchtime, the owner posts it with two photos and "any time this afternoon". A plumber who finished a job early in Cotham, a mile away, is free until five. The job reaches them, they reply with a price and say they can be there by half two, and the tap is fixed before the school run.

How to write a job that gets quick replies

  • Describe it plainly. What's happening, where in the home, since when, and anything you've tried.
  • Add photos. One of the problem, one of the area around it, and one of any make or model label. A plumber can often tell from a photo whether they have the part in the van.
  • Give a wide window. "Any time this afternoon" fits far more plumbers than "2pm exactly".
  • Mention parking and access. A space near the door makes a small job much easier to say yes to.
  • Group small jobs. If the outside tap drips too, add it. Two small jobs in one visit are more attractive than one.

Choosing a plumber

Each reply shows a price next to the plumber's profile: the work they do, photos of past jobs, reviews from other customers, how many jobs they've completed on Fill My Day, and that their documents have been checked.

The cheapest price isn't always the best one. Look at what's included, when they can arrive, and what other customers said. When you've chosen, accept their price and messaging opens between you. Our guide to finding a good plumber covers what to check and the red flags.

Agreeing the details and paying

Use the app's messages to agree access, timing and exactly what's included before any work starts. That way there's a record if anything needs sorting out later.

You pay the plumber directly, the way you agree with them. No money goes through the app at launch. After the job, you review the plumber and they review you.

Who it's for

  • Homeowners with a job that keeps slipping down the list.
  • Tenants. If you rent, check with your landlord before booking work, and agree who's paying.
  • Landlords and property managers with small repairs across several addresses. See Fill My Day for landlords.
  • Small contractors who need a plumber for a few hours at short notice. See Fill My Day for contractors.

The kind of jobs it suits

Fill My Day suits jobs that fit into a few free hours. For example:

  • a dripping or loose tap, or fitting a new one
  • a toilet that keeps running or won't flush properly
  • a slow or blocked sink, bath or shower waste
  • a small leak under a sink or behind a washing machine
  • a radiator valve that needs replacing
  • an outside tap

Anything involving gas, such as a boiler or a gas hob, must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That's the law, and it applies on Fill My Day too.

Not sure if your job is small? Our guide on why small plumbing jobs wait explains what makes a job easy to fit in.

Not for emergencies

If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If water is pouring out, turn off your stopcock first. Fill My Day is for jobs that can wait a few hours, not emergencies.

Our guide on what to do before you call a plumber covers finding your stopcock and staying safe.

What it costs

Fill My Day is free to use at launch. You agree the price with the plumber before any work starts, and you pay them directly. To know what's fair, see what plumbing jobs cost.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions,
answered straight.

Can I book a plumber yet?

Not yet. The app is in development and bookings will open when it launches in Bristol.

How much will it cost me?

Using Fill My Day is free at launch. You pay the plumber the price you agree with them, directly.

How do I know the plumber is legitimate?

Every plumber's qualifications and public liability insurance are checked by a person before they can reply to jobs. You'll also see reviews from other customers and how many jobs they've completed.

How quickly will I hear back?

It depends on who is free near you at the time. Jobs with photos, a clear description and a wide time window tend to fit more plumbers.

What if something goes wrong?

Agree the price and what's included in the app's messages before work starts, so there's a record. If there's a problem with a plumber, tell us. We can suspend or remove accounts.

Can I use it for emergencies?

Fill My Day isn't an emergency service. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. For a burst pipe, turn off your stopcock first.
